Meaningful Bible Verses for a Funeral
Choosing a reading for a funeral service is a deeply personal decision, and for many families, a piece of scripture offers exactly the right words when their own feel hard to find. Below are some of the most commonly chosen Bible verses for a funeral or memorial service, along with a little context on when each tends to be used.
Psalm 23
Perhaps the most widely read passage at funerals, its imagery of a shepherd's care and guidance "through the valley of the shadow of death" offers a sense of protection and comfort that resonates across denominations.
Matthew 11:28-30
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." A gentle passage often chosen when the person who has died was a source of comfort to others themselves.
John 11:25
"I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die." A central verse for a Christian service, often read to affirm faith in eternal life.
John 14:1-3
A reassuring passage about "many rooms" prepared, frequently chosen to offer hope and comfort to those left behind.
Revelation 21:4
"He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain." Often read towards the close of a service as a note of hope.
Where These Fit in a Service
A verse can be read aloud by a family member or officiant, printed in the order of service, or used as a short quote on the cover. Keep it to a few lines if it's being printed, longer passages can always be read aloud in full even if only an excerpt appears on paper.
Choosing What's Right for Your Service
There's no obligation to include scripture at all, plenty of services are entirely non-religious, and a favourite poem or personal reading can be just as fitting.
