The business was founded in 1965 by Eric P Massie, who began by making coffins before moving into full-time funeral directing; his son Alan later took over and, on planning retirement in 2016, selected the five-generation family firm William Purves to acquire the business. Eric P Massie continues to trade under its own name with a four-strong local team, retaining its independent, community-based identity within the wider William Purves group.
