Edwin Ainsworth Limited was founded in 1856 by local businessman James Ainsworth and has operated from Church Bank Street in Darwen since 1871, making it the oldest funeral director in the town. Originally based in cottages on Ainsworth Street with horse stabling, the business historically expanded into coach building and joinery before becoming a limited company in 1931.

The firm remains family-run, with current directors Gregory and Patricia Dabrowski and their daughter Melissa continuing the business. It offers complete funeral arrangements for families of all religious denominations and non-religious families, floral tributes, pre-arrangement planning, memorial keepsakes, and administers Golden Charter funeral plans. Facilities include an arrangement room and indoor car park, and the firm works with Darwen's cemeteries and local crematoria including Pleasington, Accrington and Overdale.

Edwin Ainsworth Ltd is a member of SAIF (Society of Allied Independent Funeral Professionals) and an appointed representative of Golden Charter Limited, and recently marked its 170th anniversary as Darwen's longest-serving funeral director.
