Armstrong Funeral Service has served Bury St Edmunds and the surrounding Suffolk area since 1997, when Nick Armstrong founded the business with a £5,000 loan from the Prince's Trust. His aim was to build a small, independent alternative to the larger funeral chains, with an emphasis on personal care, choice and respect for each family's wishes, and the team today represents over 200 years of combined funeral experience.
Thirty years on, the business remains family-run, with Nick's wife Davina Armstrong overseeing pre-paid funeral plans, alongside senior funeral director Oliver Coote and a long-serving team, and it holds SAIF Care membership. Armstrongs describes its approach as "totally bespoke" rather than package-based, offering alternative options such as green funerals, direct cremation, a vintage VW hearse, tree planting, and personalised keepsakes including fingerprint keepsakes, ashes-into-glass and memorial pins.
The firm's independence is presented as a deliberate choice - keeping profits from local spending in the local area rather than a national chain - and its office dog, Bob, is known for offering families a calming presence. The business has picked up industry awards and strong 5-star ratings from families it has supported.
